Ross Cheyne

Head of Consulting / orelogy co-founder

Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) Hons, FAusIMM

With over three decades of professional experience spanning different countries and commodities, Ross has gained extensive knowledge in both the operational and planning aspects of the mining industry. This includes site-based roles in New Zealand, Australia, Ghana, Malaysia, and Myanmar. His consulting career commenced in 2001 with CSA in Dublin, followed by Snowden Consultants in Perth before co-founding orelogy with Steve Craig in 2005.

As a Principal Consultant with orelogy, Ross managed numerous projects of varying scales and commodities at locations across the globe. His focus has been on all aspects of the mine planning cycle, with a particular emphasis on costing and financial modelling.

Our goal at orelogy has been to establish ourselves as industry leaders in mine engineering consulting, by leveraging cutting-edge technologies in mine planning and scheduling. We developed our unique and innovative mine scheduling tool, Evolution, which was subsequently acquired by Maptek in 2014. When orelogy MD Steve Craig was seconded to Maptek in 2014 as part of the Evolution software acquisition, Ross remained at orelogy and took the reins as MD. He managed orelogy from 2014 through to late 2017, successfully keeping the team of orelogists together through a challenging period in the mining industry. In late 2017 Steve returned to orelogy after completing his tenure with Maptek and resumed his role as MD, with Ross supporting him as Technical Director.

In February 2022, orelogy was acquired by idoba, part of the Perenti Group. idoba is a digital transformation service business that brings together multiple technology and service offerings, including management consulting, industrial mathematics, data science, artificial intelligence, and product development. orelogy now contributes crucial mining domain knowledge to idoba’s vision to co-create a better and more sustainable future, in mining and beyond.

With Steve taking a step back from the business in November 2023, Ross made the natural transition to acting CEO of orelogy.

With the recent appointment of Peta Barnes as CEO, Ross now transitions into the position of Head of Consulting, where he will continue to drive and develop orelogy’s core consulting business.

With a core team of experienced orelogists, strong partnerships with complementary consulting and engineering groups, and the leading-edge technical capability of idoba, we continue to provide a complete and compelling offering to our clients across discipline, commodity, and geography.

As we move forward into the future, orelogy will grow and develop as part of the larger idoba ecosystem, striving to stay ahead of the curve in the ever-evolving mining industry.
